Anxin Exhibition Center

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

Within the symbolic vocabulary of spatial design, Po Chun Tu's Exhibition Center orchestrates a profound dialogue between primal shelter and contemporary monumentality, wherein the curved timber forms function as archetypal markers of sanctuary translated through the language of advanced fabrication into experiential architecture. The material choice carries deep symbolic resonance, wood representing across cultures the fundamental connection between humanity and forest, between constructed dwelling and living organism, the visible grain patterns serving as indexical traces of biological time measured in annual growth rings now preserved within architectural form. The vertical orientation of the panels evokes primordial associations with sacred groves, forest cathedrals, and the aspirational upward gesture that characterizes spiritual architecture across traditions, the varying heights creating a mountainous topography that suggests pilgrimage landscapes and threshold experiences. The warm chromatic range operates semiotically as signifier of welcome, safety, and organic authenticity, countering associations of cold institutional exhibition spaces with qualities of domestic warmth and natural shelter. The processional narrow passages between monumental forms invoke rite-of-passage symbolism, the physical movement through constricted space toward opening functioning as spatial metaphor for transformation and discovery. The curved profiles suggest organic growth patterns, wind erosion, and water flow, invoking nature's formative processes while celebrating human capacity to shape materials into expressions of wonder. The deliberate contrast between warm wood and dark industrial ceiling may be interpreted as symbolic negotiation between nature and technology, organic tradition and contemporary possibility, the installation serving as bridge territory where these apparent oppositions achieve harmonious synthesis.

The shape of wood veneer shavings radians is the main inspiration for the design. The curved shape wall of logs scattered and stacked in the periphery covers the whole exhibition hall, creating a mysterious and quiet atmosphere through the physical structure. With the large log around, let a person feel like in the forest. At the entrance, vaguely the map distribution of the forest farm resources owned by Anxin around the world. The map made of log waste vividly shows the history. The specially designed rotating plate adds interest and interaction to the scene.
