Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020
The architectural language of this retail environment operates as a sophisticated system of visual communication wherein material choices, spatial arrangements, and chromatic decisions encode cultural meanings about quality, craft, authenticity, and premium experience that inform consumer perception before conscious evaluation occurs. Warm timber elements function as carriers of artisanal signification, their visible grain patterns and organic coloration activating associations with handcraft, natural materials, traditional confectionery workshops, and the transformative alchemy of chocolate-making that connects raw cacao to refined confection through skilled human intervention. The vertical orientation of wooden slats creates an upward visual momentum traditionally associated with aspiration, growth, and elevated experience, while their rhythmic repetition establishes a meditative quality that slows perception and encourages contemplative engagement with products rather than hurried transaction. The vermillion ceiling planes invoke multiple symbolic registers simultaneously, the color carrying associations with passion, appetite stimulation, celebration, and premium positioning within retail contexts where red historically signals importance and special occasion worthiness. White surfaces and pale stone countertops contribute meanings of purity, cleanliness, and refinement that speak to food safety concerns while also evoking the blank canvas upon which artisanal creation occurs, the marble surfaces particularly activating associations with classical craft traditions, durability, and timeless quality. The geometric precision of linear lighting fixtures introduces contemporary technological sophistication that balances the organic warmth of timber, suggesting innovation within tradition and the marriage of craft heritage with modern excellence. Curved alcove forms soften the overall geometric rigor while creating intimate zones within the larger space, their threshold quality marking transitions between browsing territories and suggesting the cabinet of curiosities tradition wherein precious objects receive architectural framing proportionate to their value. The herringbone floor pattern provides grounding through its references to traditional European flooring traditions while its interlocking geometry suggests completeness, order, and careful attention to detail that transfers associatively to product quality expectations.
Represent the new concept and overall brand in an innovative way through the design of the store, specifically for the Canadian market and Yorkdale Clientele. Using the experience of a previous pop up and international locations to innovate and rethink the entire experience. Create an ultra-functional store, that would work well for a very high traffic, intricate space.
