Brazil & Murgel's Dengo 80g Chocolate Bar operates as a sophisticated exercise in material symbolism where each compositional element contributes to a layered narrative about craft, nature, and cultural value, the chocolate's faceted geometry may evoke multiple archetypal associations including crystalline mineral formations suggesting precious stones and earthly treasure, origami paper-folding traditions implying transformation through skilled intervention, or modernist architectural forms connecting artisanal food to high design discourse, this geometric complexity distinguishes the product from conventional confectionery, positioning it within visual vocabularies typically reserved for luxury objects and collectible artifacts, the ceramic vessel introduces associations with pottery traditions, handcraft heritage, and the domestic ritual of food presentation, its ribbed surface suggesting both natural forms like bamboo or wood grain and the deliberate marks of artisan production, the tropical leaf carries potent symbolic weight as direct reference to cacao's botanical origins, connecting the refined finished product to its agricultural source and tropical terroir, green traditionally symbolizes growth, vitality, and natural abundance, here specifically invoking the lush environments where cacao trees flourish, the dark wood ground introduces temporal depth through its weathered appearance, suggesting age, tradition, and the passage of materials through time from living tree to crafted surface, the overhead viewpoint positions the viewer as contemplative observer looking down upon an offering or altar-like arrangement, potentially activating associations with ritual presentation, sacred foods, or ceremonial consumption, the warm brown tones dominating the chocolate and tray create psychological associations with earth, comfort, and sensory pleasure while the cool green provides vital energy and organic authenticity, together these elements construct chocolate as cultural artifact connecting nature to craft to contemplative consumption.
The design is inspired by the origin of Dengo's cacao – the heart of the Atlantic Forest in Bahia, Brazil. The cacao is harvested in cabruca, a traditional agroforestry and forest-positive system. In an effort to inspire, create brand recognition and convey the brand's message to the consumer, the designers turned the chocolate bar into a sculpture that represents some of the surrounding elements, such as dry leaves on the ground, foliage of the tall trees that provide beautiful play of light and shadow, and a variety of seeds.
