The luminous circle at the heart of Dabi Robert's Poise Adjustable Table Lamp activates profound archetypal associations with wholeness, perfection, and celestial bodies, its unbroken circumference traditionally embodying concepts of eternity, completion, and the cosmic cycle across numerous cultural traditions from mandala symbolism to the perfect forms celebrated in classical geometry. The warm white illumination emanating from this circular form connects to universal human associations between light and knowledge, enlightenment and clarity, the lamp functioning as a contemporary interpretation of the flame that has symbolized wisdom and guidance since ancient times. The diagonal support arm introduces a compelling counterpoint to circular perfection, its linear trajectory suggesting direction, purpose, and the dynamic principle of movement or change, creating a visual dialectic between the eternal circle and the temporal line, between being and becoming. This intersection of circle and line evokes geometric relationships explored in sacred geometry, where such conjunctions often represent the meeting of heaven and earth, spirit and matter, the infinite and the measurable. The act of balance central to the design's concept and title carries rich symbolic weight, suggesting equilibrium between opposing forces, the centered composure required for considered action, and the harmonious integration of functional and aesthetic imperatives. The material contrast between luminous ring and dark supporting structure may be read as an expression of fundamental dualities, light and shadow, presence and support, visibility and infrastructure, these elements working in complementary relationship rather than opposition. The adjustability implicit in the design suggests adaptive responsiveness, the capacity to direct illumination according to need, which carries associations of intelligence, flexibility, and purposeful intention, the lamp becoming an instrument of directed attention and selective revelation within the spaces it inhabits.
The acrobatic appearance of Poise, a table lamp designed by Robert Dabi of unform.studio shifts between static & dynamic and a big or small posture. Depending on the proportion between its' illuminated ring and the arm holding it, an intersecting or tangent line to the circle occurs. When placed on a higher shelf, the ring could overhang the shelf; or by tilting the ring, it could touch a surrounding wall. The intention of this adjustability is to get the owner creatively involved and play with the light source in proportion to other objects surrounding it.
