Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2020

Within contemporary workplace architecture, Evolution Design's Atrium presents a sophisticated symbolic negotiation between organizational structure and spatial liberation, the vertical void at its center functioning as both literal architectural necessity and potent metaphor for transparent corporate culture, hierarchical flattening, and open communication channels where visual and physical access across levels materially enacts democratic workplace ideals increasingly valued in knowledge-economy organizations seeking to attract creative professionals who prioritize collaborative culture over traditional command structures. The suspended sculptural element occupying the central void commands particular symbolic attention, its faceted crystalline geometry suggesting multiple interpretive possibilities: as crystallization of innovation and dynamic thinking, the form capturing transformative energy in geometric language, its apparent rotation or spiral configuration evoking growth, evolution, and continuous development, traditional spiral symbolism across cultures associating the form with cosmic energy, life force, and the reconciliation of opposing forces through dynamic equilibrium, the contrast between its angular precision and organic movement suggesting synthesis of rational analytical thinking with creative intuition, a spatial representation of balanced organizational capabilities. Color deployment carries distinct semiotic weight, the warm honey tones of timber surfaces throughout establishing grounding in natural material authenticity and environmental responsibility, wood universally coded across cultures as living material connecting inhabitants to organic processes and suggesting sustainability values, craftsmanship respect, and material honesty increasingly central to contemporary brand identity for organizations positioning themselves as environmentally conscious, the specific warm golden oak or ash tones evoking Scandinavian design traditions associated with social democracy, egalitarianism, and human-centered design philosophy, these cultural resonances reinforcing workplace values of flat hierarchy and employee wellbeing. The emerald living wall ascending the vertical plane functions beyond decorative gesture to become powerful biophilic symbol, the integration of living natural systems within built environment enacting material commitment to environmental symbiosis, the vertical garden orientation suggesting aspiration and growth while its verdant vitality introduces life force into technological workspace, green maintaining consistent cross-cultural positive associations with growth, renewal, harmony, and in contemporary sustainability discourse serving as primary color signifier of environmental consciousness and ecological responsibility, the wall's lush three-dimensional texture providing visual and psychological relief from the geometric precision dominating surrounding architecture, representing the organic complement to rational structure. Strategic chromatic accents including vibrant red architectural elements and saturated furniture colors function as wayfinding semiotics and energy activation points, red carrying complex symbolic freight as simultaneously commanding attention through its evolutionary association with arousal and danger while culturally coded as vitality, passion, energy, and in contemporary branding contexts innovation and boldness, the saturated yellow seating evoking optimism, creativity, intellectual energy, traditionally associated with illumination and mental clarity, the orange tones suggesting warmth, social connection, enthusiasm, and collaborative energy, the varied palette establishing zones and creating visual rhythm while avoiding monotony, the diversity of hues potentially representing organizational diversity and inclusive culture. The transparency achieved through extensive glazing in balustrade systems and overhead ceiling structure carries potent symbolic meaning within corporate contexts where literal visual transparency serves as material metaphor for organizational transparency, ethical business practice, open communication, and accountability, the ability to see across levels and departments materially enacting flat hierarchy and accessibility while psychological research confirms that visual connection to colleagues enhances sense of community and shared purpose, the architectural decision to maximize sightlines rather than create enclosed offices making visible statement about organizational values prioritizing collaboration over individual privacy, collective mission over departmental silos. Geometric vocabulary throughout employs primarily orthogonal rectilinear language of horizontal balcony planes and vertical wall surfaces suggesting order, rationality, efficiency, and structural clarity, classical associations with the square and rectangle as symbols of earthly material realm, stability, and human constructed order, yet this geometric rationality deliberately interrupted and activated by the dynamic crystalline central sculpture whose faceted irregular geometry and apparent rotation introduce movement, transformation, and creative disruption into the ordered framework, the formal tension between static architectural container and dynamic sculptural intervention potentially representing organizational balance between established process and innovative thinking, between structural stability and adaptive change. The vertical spatial emphasis with its dramatic height and layered horizontal planes invites consideration of ascension symbolism, the movement upward traditionally associated across cultures with spiritual elevation, intellectual development, achievement of higher perspective, and aspiration toward transcendent goals, though in contemporary secular workplace context this verticality may signify ambitious organizational vision, progressive thinking, and elevation through collective effort rather than religious transcendence, the democratic visual access across levels preventing vertical hierarchy from encoding social hierarchy, instead framing height as shared spatial resource and collective achievement. Natural light flooding from the glazed ceiling structure above carries potent symbolic associations as illumination, enlightenment, clarity, transparency, and divine inspiration translated into secular workplace context as intellectual clarity, innovative thinking, and organizational openness, the zenithal light source positioned overhead suggesting authoritative illumination from above yet democratically distributed across all levels and occupants equally, avoiding the exclusionary illumination of traditional executive corner offices with premium light access.

Swiss architecture office Evolution Design in partnership with Russian architecture studio T+T architects has designed a spacious multifunctional atrium at the new corporate headquarters of Sberbank in Moscow. The daylight flooded atrium houses diverse coworking spaces and a coffee bar, with the suspended diamond shaped meeting room being the focal point of the internal courtyard. The mirror reflections, glazed internal façade and the use of plants add the sense of spaciousness and continuity.
