DaMingDingDing Chinese Hot Pot

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Copper as the dominant material language carries profound symbolic weight in CHENG HUI HSIN's DaMingDingDing Chinese Hot Pot, traditionally associated with warmth, conductivity, and the alchemical transformation of raw ingredients through heat—a particularly resonant choice for an establishment centered on the communal ritual of hot pot dining where copper vessels historically served to conduct flame to broth. The geometric lattice screens function as spatial mediators between public passage and private gathering, their traditional patterns evoking the continuity of cultural craft traditions while simultaneously operating as modern scrim elements that tantalize with glimpsed interiors. The one-point perspective drawing toward illuminated entrance doors suggests threshold symbolism, positioning the viewer at the decisive moment between exterior world and interior sanctuary, the passage from public to convivial space. Vertical timber battens along the service counter establish rhythmic repetition suggestive of natural growth patterns and organic ordering principles, their warm honey tones grounding the metallic sophistication with earthen authenticity. The angular ceiling interventions may be read as contemporary interpretations of traditional bracketing systems, translated into bold geometric statements that honor structural expression while asserting present-moment design consciousness. Light as symbolic element operates at multiple registers: the backlit screens suggest lantern traditions and the warmth of home fires, while the linear cove lighting traces paths of guidance and welcome. The crimson accent cabinet introduces auspicious color associations deeply embedded in celebratory and prosperity symbolism. The integration of visible kitchen preparation zones speaks to contemporary transparency values while connecting to ancient traditions of communal cooking spaces where sustenance preparation formed the heart of domestic and social life.

This is a Chinese hot pot restaurant in Fuzhou. The designer uses the characteristics of the light strip and the titanium plate to reflect the light source, to outline the sense of indoor space. Using linear light to outline the entire space, through the light and shadow of the titanium plated metal plate, the designer has created a cheerful light field. Take a time machine to travel through time and space, and enjoy the food at this time. The light particles converge into layers of light, beam, showing the sense of speed through the lines, and marking a splendid time for you and us.
