Gis Chair

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022

Sepehr Mehrdadfar's Gis Chair operates as a sophisticated material statement where walnut timber transcends its utilitarian function to embody archetypal resonances of shelter, embrace, and organic vitality. The shell-like form activates primal associations with protective enclosure, the concave geometry echoing the cupped palm, the nurturing vessel, the protective carapace that shelters vulnerable life within. The trinity of supporting legs carries numerological significance suggesting dynamic stability and forward momentum, while their zoomorphic character invokes the archetypal animal familiar, the loyal creature that carries and supports human endeavor. The brass ferrules function as precious thresholds where the organic wooden body meets the mineral floor plane, marking the boundary between living form and static ground with alchemical metal that has signified transformation and permanence across countless cultural traditions. The warm brown chromatic register connects to earth element symbolism, grounding the work in associations of stability, nourishment, and natural cycles of growth, while golden amber tones suggest solar warmth, vitality, and the preciousness of aged materials refined by time. The visible natural characteristics of the wood, the grain patterns, checking, and tonal variations, serve as indices of authenticity and individual identity, each marking testifying to the specific tree from which this material originated and rejecting the anonymity of industrial production. The continuous curving form suggests the mathematical sublime of natural growth patterns, where organic geometry follows principles of efficiency and beauty simultaneously. As functional sculpture, the chair proposes that everyday sitting might become an act of aesthetic engagement, transforming mundane rest into contemplative communion with material beauty and craft mastery.

Gis is a three legged wooden chair with bronze feet and is carved out from two walnut logs with exquisite craftsmanship to seem as a sculpture. The wood knots and scars are remained exposed to give the objects a special characteristic. Despite its uncanny appearance, Gis is ergonomic due to the careful design of curves and angles. The design is an exploration of solid wood possibilities and also is a walk on the edge of Art and Design, Beauty and Function.
