The Rossmore Residential Multi-Unit

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

The elongated catenary curves defining Art Nesterenko's Rossmore facade may be interpreted as archetypal threshold markers, their horseshoe or arch formations historically associated across cultures with passage, protection, and transformation between states of being—here mediating between public urban realm and private domestic sanctuary. The vertical aspiration of these repeated curved elements evokes the symbolic language of Gothic architecture, where upward-sweeping forms traditionally signified spiritual ascent and the elevation of quotidian existence toward higher meaning. The number and rhythm of structural fins creates visual music, their repetition suggesting the mathematical harmonies that classical architectural theory associated with cosmic order and human proportion. The integration of abundant vegetation within the architectural framework participates in longstanding symbolic traditions of the garden as paradise, the cultivated oasis within constructed walls offering refuge and renewal. The warm interior illumination visible through glazed surfaces functions as universal symbol of hearth and welcome, the lit window representing safety, belonging, and human presence within sheltering enclosure. The building's material palette—warm rose and mauve tones cooling toward violet and gray—suggests the alchemical transformation of base mineral matter into refined aesthetic experience, concrete transcending industrial utility to achieve precious stone-like presence. The catenary arch itself, mathematically optimal for structural performance, carries symbolic resonance as form following natural law, architecture aligned with physical truth. Ground-level permeability through generous arched openings suggests democratic accessibility and urban generosity, the building offering passage and protection to the streetscape rather than defensive fortification against it.

The Rossmore is a contemporary luxury apartment building. It is inspired by the concepts of Art Deco Design and adapted to today’s world. This has been reflected in the material selection, the sculptural elements and the building facade. The Rossmore will use concrete cladding and timber to allow for sustainable design and cost effective construction.
