Rodrigo Erthal's Vague Stool operates as a rich symbolic text within material culture, encoding meanings through its formal language, material choices, and contextual placement that speak to contemporary values surrounding craft, nature, and the mediation between human fabrication and organic form. The linear repetition of parallel rods evokes archetypal associations with natural structures, suggesting the ribcage protecting vital organs, the parallel veins of a leaf conducting life-giving nutrients, or the layered striations of sedimentary rock recording geological time, positioning the designed object within symbolic conversations about growth, protection, and natural order. The warm copper or terracotta chromatic identity carries connotations of earth, warmth, and material transformation through heat, metals being among humanity's earliest technologies for shaping raw materials into useful forms, while the specific reddish-orange tonality suggests associations with autumn harvest, hearth fire, and the productive tension between decay and preservation. The triangular leg configuration embodies geometric stability and has ancient symbolic associations with strength, divine trinity, and the resolution of binary oppositions through synthesis, while the three-point contact with the ground suggests rootedness and secure connection to the earth plane. The interstitial voids between rods create a form that is simultaneously present and absent, solid yet permeable, encoding contemporary design values of transparency, lightness, and material economy while metaphorically suggesting that function need not require mass or opacity. The deliberate contrast between the refined industrial object and the raw brutalist concrete environment creates a dialogue between control and chance, precision and imperfection, suggesting reconciliation between technological advancement and acceptance of natural processes. The saddle-like dip at the seating surface encodes invitation and accommodation, the form yielding conceptually to the human body it anticipates receiving, embodying hospitality and service through its ergonomic gesture. The title Vague suggests deliberate resistance to rigid categorization, perhaps symbolizing contemporary values of fluidity, ambiguity, and the productive uncertainty that allows objects and ideas to function across multiple contexts without fixed definition.
Vague is a de-constructed stool with structural curves which form its shape. An astonishing piece of furniture, for every different angle from which it is seen reveals a harmonious composition. The metal-cast stools bring out the poetry of what was the sketch inception; lines previously drawn morph into tubes and highlight the environment as a ready-to-enjoy object of art.
