Plycelain Tableware Collection

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Yuting Chang's Plycelain Tableware Collection operates within rich symbolic territories where the vessel archetype intersects with material innovation to create objects resonating with layered cultural meanings. The nested stacking configuration activates associations with containment protection and the graduated hierarchies found throughout natural and cultural systems suggesting matryoshka-like enclosure where smaller forms find shelter within larger ones. The circular forms evoke wholeness completion and the eternal return while their cylindrical extension implies temporal duration and the vertical axis connecting earthly and celestial realms across many traditions. The distinctive horizontal handles create a cruciform intersection with the vertical vessel bodies suggesting balance equilibrium and the meeting point of opposing directional forces. Blue striations carry multivalent symbolic weight historically associated with heaven transcendence contemplation and precious rarity in ceramic traditions where cobalt decoration marked objects of particular value. The parallel linear repetition suggests measurement time passage musical rhythm and the ordered intervals that structure both physical and metaphysical experience. White porcelain bodies traditionally symbolize purity refinement and the transformation of raw earth through fire into luminous cultural artifact. The revealed layered construction speaks to accumulation patience and the building of meaning through incremental repeated actions. As functional vessels intended for nourishment and refreshment these objects participate in the deep symbolic territory of sustenance communion and the rituals through which communities gather and individuals sustain themselves. The craft-based production method honors traditions valuing direct material engagement skilled handwork and the meaningful labor that imbues objects with presence beyond mere commodity status.

Plycelain -a term coined by Yuting Chang combining plywood and porcelain- is a collection of multilayered slip casting drinkware. Chang creates a contemporary version of blue and white ware through applying slip casting, the mass-production technique of ceramics. By adapting the process of slip casting, layers form, and subtle blue lines are exposed on the cut surfaces, which emphasize the beautiful relationship between assembled parts.
