Sunbay Park Hotel

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Architectural form language in NDA - NEW DESIGN ASSOCIATES LIMITED's Sunbay Park Hotel operates through symbolic registers that communicate aspiration, hospitality, and environmental dialogue through material choice, formal gesture, and compositional arrangement. The tripartite tower grouping evokes archetypal associations with sacred mountains, trinity formations, and graduated hierarchies found across cultural traditions from temple complexes to medieval cathedral silhouettes, suggesting destinations of pilgrimage and transcendent experience. The curved crown element adorning the tallest structure functions as a powerful gestural symbol, its sweeping form suggesting unfurling sails, cresting waves, or ascending birds, metaphors of journey, natural force, and freedom that resonate deeply with hospitality and coastal leisure contexts. The golden chromatic palette carries accumulated cultural weight as signifier of sunlight, warmth, prosperity, and welcome, its application across building facades transforming potentially overwhelming mass into luminous presence that appears to emanate rather than merely reflect light. The horizontal banding articulating each tower creates visual rhythm suggesting organic growth patterns, sedimentary layers, or woven textiles, humanizing industrial scale through reference to natural and craft processes. The reflective relationship between towers and water establishes a symbolic dialogue between built and natural realms, the mirrored images suggesting Jungian reflection, the integration of conscious ambition with unconscious depth, architectural ego meeting environmental anima. The palm grove mediating between beach and building operates as threshold symbol, marking passage between natural leisure and cultivated hospitality while maintaining vital connection between realms. The triadic compositional arrangement suggests stability through dynamic balance, the asymmetry creating visual energy while the graduated heights establish harmonious proportion that speaks to classical ideals of beauty through mathematical relationship.

The complex includes one five-star hotel, two condotels, water parks, numerous commercial and public facilities, which would enrich the living experience of both travelers and local city-dwellers. The modern design of this project aims to create some iconic urban shapes for the city, but to integrate softly with surrounding spaces and ensure urban ventilation as well as sea views for backside areas. The usage of Champa patterns and colors evokes the traditional spirit in a contemporary design.
