The Hotel Nudibranch Hotel and Resort

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

The ribbed domed forms of Yan Pan's Nudibranch Hotel and Resort function as powerful archetypal vessels, their curved profiles evoking the cosmic egg, the protective shell, and the primordial shelter that appears across human mythological traditions as symbols of genesis, protection, and transformative potential. The choice of the nudibranch as morphological inspiration carries rich symbolic weight within marine symbolism, where these creatures represent adaptability, beauty emerging from hidden depths, and the capacity for regeneration and self-defense through spectacular coloration. The horizontal ribbing that defines the architectural surfaces may be read as metaphorical gills, breathing membranes that mediate between interior sanctuary and exterior environment, suggesting architecture that respires and exchanges with its surroundings rather than sealing inhabitants away from natural systems. The nocturnal setting amplifies symbolic resonance, positioning these luminous forms as beacons or lanterns in darkness, traditional symbols of guidance, hope, and human presence persisting against the vast unknown. The full moon presence introduces lunar symbolism with its associations of cyclical time, feminine principle, reflection, and the governance of tides, particularly appropriate for a coastal architecture that must acknowledge oceanic rhythms. The ascending aircraft traces a threshold crossing, the ancient symbolic gesture of departure and journey that connects earthbound experience to celestial aspiration. The pairing of two domes establishes duality symbolism, potentially evoking complementary principles, partnership, or the dialogue between different states of being. The organic landscape topography between structures suggests the garden archetype, cultivated nature that mediates between wild and built environments. The verdant moss mound at center functions as a small mountain or axis mundi in miniature, a grounding element that connects sky and earth. The sinuous pathways invite reading as life-journey metaphors, their curves requiring continuous navigation rather than direct linear approach. Human figures at this diminutive scale suggest humility before natural and cosmic forces, a proportional relationship that invites contemplation rather than dominion.

The design is inspired by sea creatures, which Nanji Island is famous for, such as nudibranch. The "mollusk" lifts itself by its soft legs and stretches its tentacles to explore different directions. The public part of the hotel resembles a floating space above the sand. The sandy ground blends into the hotel to become an outdoor playground in the shadow cast by the building above. The building blends the boundaries between buildings and landscape by its organic form and flexible connectivity. Eco-friendly technologies have been installed to minimize the environmental impacts.
