Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Yang Bing and Hao Liyun's Office design operates as a sophisticated spatial text encoding multiple layers of cultural meaning through its architectural vocabulary. The arch, repeated throughout in various scales and configurations, carries profound symbolic weight across numerous traditions, representing the threshold between states, the portal of transformation, and the honored passage from one condition to another. The barrel vault crowning the entry space evokes sacred architecture, suggesting the reverential treatment of passage and the elevation of everyday work into something approaching ritual significance. The semicircular and stadium-shaped apertures function as frames within frames, each opening operating simultaneously as practical light source and symbolic window, offering glimpses of further spaces that suggest infinite regression and continuous discovery. The curved wooden partitions introduce organic geometry into the rectilinear tradition, their biomorphic profiles evoking natural forms like unfurling ferns or ocean waves frozen in warm timber, symbolizing growth, transformation, and the integration of natural processes into built environments. The stepped platforms recall ancient gathering spaces, amphitheaters, and terraced landscapes, encoding ideas of hierarchy, display, and the collective observation of valued objects. The monolithic plaster treatment unifying all surfaces suggests continuity and wholeness, the erasure of joints and seams creating visual silence that allows occupants to focus on human interaction and creative work. The desert plants within the arched alcove introduce living symbolism, these hardy species representing resilience, adaptation, and the capacity to thrive in challenging conditions. The warm neutral palette operates symbolically as a blank canvas, a receptive ground upon which human activity becomes the primary content, while simultaneously conveying qualities of earthiness, authenticity, and connection to material origins.

EVD office is conceived based on two design threads. The designers created a U-shaped area that combines with one long side and the 5 large windows, allowing natural light to filter in and diffuse freely. The spatial form is shaped based on classical languages, designers utilized classical architectural elements with modern approaches, to add a sense of eternity to the space. Besides, sphere, the most beautiful solid figure is brought in, which enhances the spatial aesthetic. The design starts from solving with spatial limitations caused by pipes for fire protection and air conditioners.
