Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
Davies's Translucence Pendant Light operates as a meditation on spiral geometry, engaging archetypal symbols that resonate across numerous cultural traditions where the spiral represents growth, cosmic energy, and the eternal cycle of expansion and return. The concentrically nested rings trace paths that echo the nautilus shell, long associated with mathematical perfection and the golden ratio, suggesting harmony between natural law and human design intervention. The vortex configuration drawing vision toward a luminous center evokes mandala structures found across contemplative traditions, where circular forms with defined centers serve as focal points for meditative attention and symbolic representations of cosmic wholeness. The choice of transparent material carries significant connotative weight, traditionally associated with purity, clarity of purpose, truth, and the revelation of hidden structures—transparency suggests nothing concealed, an honest expression of form and function unified. Warm golden illumination emerging from clear substrate recalls alchemical symbolism of transmutation, base matter elevated through the application of knowledge and skill into something precious and radiant. The suspended positioning, floating in apparent atmospheric void, engages threshold symbolism—the pendant occupies liminal space between earthly function and celestial aspiration, grounded by practical purpose yet elevated through aesthetic transcendence. Numerologically, the multiple rings might be read as representing stages of initiation or levels of understanding, each layer requiring passage before reaching the illuminated core. The diagonal ridging creates visual rhythm suggesting movement and time, transforming static object into dynamic experience, while the overall spherical containment implies completeness and self-sufficient unity. As functional object elevated to contemplative sculpture, the work participates in long traditions of decorative arts that encode meaning within everyday forms, transforming the simple act of illumination into an invitation for deeper reflection on light as both physical phenomenon and metaphor for knowledge, warmth, and human aspiration toward clarity.
This design references a quirkier side of lighting, offering a range of non-uniform, asymmetric blown glass forms that feature a hidden light source, emanating from a selection of intricate acrylic centres. Each can be viewed as a bespoke hand-crafted item yet belong to an overall aesthetic that ultimately explores the relationship between light, both natural and integral, and the singular beautiful properties of overlaying layers of twisted optical glass. Initially offered as a stand-alone pendant, future plans include table-top variations, wall lights and multi-array feature chandeliers.
