Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Jiang & Associates Creative Design's Pingshan Cultural Cluster Book Mall Bookstore employs architectural semiotics to construct a symbolic narrative around knowledge, aspiration, and cultural elevation. The monumental vertical void functions as a spatial metaphor for intellectual ascent—the physical journey upward via twin staircases becomes an allegory for educational advancement and the pursuit of enlightenment. The mirrored ceiling introduces symbolism of infinite reflection and boundless possibility, suggesting that knowledge multiplies when shared, while the literal doubling of space implies abundance beyond immediate perception. The material dialogue between concrete and oak operates within established architectural symbolism: concrete's association with permanence, strength, and institutional authority combines with timber's connotations of natural wisdom, organic growth, and human warmth. This pairing suggests an institution that balances gravitas with accessibility. The geometric arrangement of modular display cubes references both modernist design principles of democratic simplicity and the building-block nature of learning itself—knowledge constructed piece by piece into larger structures of understanding. The shelving systems lining the periphery evoke traditional library symbolism, their floor-to-ceiling presence suggesting repositories of accumulated wisdom. Lighting descends from above like intellectual illumination, the starburst fixtures functioning as symbolic sources of enlightenment within the contemplative void. The presence of human figures engaged in solitary exploration reinforces the space's function as a secular sanctuary for individual intellectual pursuit—a contemporary temple of learning where architectural grandeur honors the book as cultural artifact. The overall spatial experience suggests a threshold between everyday commercial activity and elevated cultural engagement.

Pingshan Cultural Cluster - Book Mall, taking the local Hakka enclosed house culture as the design concept and the pattern of round outside but square inside as the main feature, has its space divided into "Square" and "Round" zones. The square zone is oriented to young people, the overall layout of which expands around the central activity area. Inspired by "Diaolou" (tower building), we adopt the highly structured facade of Diaolou to create characteristic walls for the atrium. The use of mirror finish ceiling makes the image extend infinitely, activating the memory to the whole space.
