Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2021
Twin vertical volumes rising from sculptural horizontal base encode architectural semiotics of aspiration and achievement, the paired tower configuration suggesting both stability through bilateral symmetry and dynamism through repetitive vertical rhythm, while their soaring height embodies culturally persistent associations between verticality and advancement, reaching upward as humanity has consistently built tall to express ambition, technological prowess, commemoration, and desire to transcend terrestrial limitations, the gesture reading across cultural contexts as statement of capability and future orientation. Glass curtain wall cladding carries complex symbolic freight within contemporary architectural discourse, simultaneously signifying transparency and openness valued within corporate and civic contexts, technological sophistication through the material's demanding engineering and fabrication requirements, and participation in international architectural modernism's continuing evolution, while the material's reflectivity creates symbolic duality, the building both revealing interior program through transparency and concealing it through mirrored surfaces that deflect rather than admit the gaze, this ambiguity between disclosure and concealment resonating with corporate architecture's negotiation between public presentation and private function. The sculptural podium with its curved, flowing white surfaces and horizontal banding introduces organic formal vocabulary that provides symbolic counterpoint to the rational geometric order of the towers above, curves and flowing forms traditionally associated with natural phenomena, fluidity, movement, and organic growth, this formal language potentially referencing the waterfront setting through nautical or wave-like associations, while the white coloration carries connotations of purity, clarity, beginning, and institutional or civic importance across numerous cultural frameworks, the base thus potentially encoding more public, accessible, welcoming symbolic content compared to the more reserved corporate verticality above. The composition's emergence from atmospheric mist activates archetypal imagery of architecture revealed, the building appearing almost to materialize from indeterminate atmospheric conditions much as mythological structures appear from clouds or sacred architecture emerges from morning mist in landscape painting traditions, this meteorological framing lending the contemporary commercial tower something of the numinous or transcendent quality associated with sacred or commemorative architecture across traditions, the atmospheric veil simultaneously concealing and revealing architecture suggesting threshold experiences between known and unknown, material and immaterial. Waterfront positioning carries significant symbolic resonance across cultures, water boundaries traditionally marking liminal zones between land and sea, domestic and foreign, known and unknown, while serving as sites of exchange, transformation, and connection, the tower's situation at water's edge thus potentially encoding meanings related to gateway, portal, threshold, and mediation between different realms, appropriate symbolism for financial or international administrative programs that facilitate flows of capital, information, and connection across boundaries. The vertical-horizontal relationship between soaring towers and extended base replicates archetypal compositional structures found across architectural history and visual representation, the vertical element consistently associated with aspiration, spirit, consciousness, and the divine or transcendent realm, while the horizontal connotes earthly grounding, materiality, stability, and human scale experience, the combination of both creating compositional completeness that balances opposing principles in dynamic equilibrium, this fundamental architectural gesture carrying symbolic weight that transcends specific stylistic expression to engage deep structural patterns in human spatial symbolism. Cool blue-gray chromatic dominance invites interpretation through color symbolism frameworks where blue traditionally associates with sky, water, infinity, trust, stability, technology, and corporate professionalism across contemporary visual communication contexts, while gray suggests neutrality, sophistication, timelessness, and technological precision, the restricted palette perhaps encoding values of restraint, refinement, seriousness, and professional authority appropriate to financial or governmental institutional programs. The photographic capture itself functions as mediating representation, this particular image selecting atmospheric drama as interpretive frame for architectural experience, emphasizing qualities of emergence, mystery, environmental situation, and aesthetic contemplation over purely technical documentation, the representational choices thus constructing particular narrative about how this architecture might be understood and what meanings viewers might derive from encounter with built form, the image participating in architecture's cultural circulation where buildings become known not through direct experience but through carefully constructed visual representations that shape reception and interpretation.
The project is located in Hengqin CBD Island and classified as mix-used land, including office, conference, exhibition, apartment and retail. All functions are planned as a whole to forge it into a landmark.
Inspired by "Kowloon map", the project has a unique and spiral shape rising from the ground to the sky to express speed, power, and vitality. In order to achieve such elegant form, state-of-the-art digital techniques are used to rationalize the complex shape and achieve cost control. The project is the combination of traditional Chinese totem and contemporary architecture development.
