Thermal Spring Hotel

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

The subterranean realm Strickland has created operates as a threshold space between the constructed human world and the primordial geological depths, activating ancient archetypes of descent, transformation, and renewal that permeate mythological traditions across cultures, the cave as symbolic locus carries profound resonance as the site of initiation, oracle consultation, and spiritual rebirth, from Platonic allegory to Mithraic mysteries to countless indigenous traditions recognizing underground spaces as passages to other states of being, the water element amplifies this transformative symbolism as the universal medium of purification, healing, and liminal transition, its reflective surface creating a threshold between above and below that mirrors the psychological journey between conscious and unconscious realms, the vertical stone formations rising from the depths evoke archetypal pillars marking sacred boundaries or axis mundi connections between earthly and numinous domains, their organic irregularity suggesting they emerged from natural forces rather than human fabrication, the descending water cascade introduces the symbolic vocabulary of fountains and falls traditionally associated with life-giving force and continuous renewal, the chromatic program of deep teals and blacks punctuated by warm amber light translates the thermal experience into visual terms, the cooler tones suggesting the mineral-rich waters themselves while warm accents evoke the geothermal heat sources below, the bilateral symmetry created by the reflective water surface activates dyadic symbolism of doubling and complementarity, suggesting the integration of opposites that healing traditions often seek, the numerical predominance of paired and triadic stone formations reinforces themes of relationship and dynamic balance, from a spatial semiotics perspective the architecture communicates sanctuary through enclosure while the water and light elements promise transformation, together constructing an environment where contemporary visitors might access experiences of elemental connection that industrialized life tends to obscure

This Thermal Spring is located in B1 at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto in Japan. Being located in Kyoto, which has a deep history and culture in Japan, and being located in front of Nijo castle, which is valuable historical heritage that has looked at Japan's long history elevate the value even more.
