Botchan Ressha Packaging

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

The visual system encoded within this packaging design operates through sophisticated symbolic registers that communicate value, heritage, and artisanal authenticity to contemporary consumers seeking meaningful connections with products. The railway locomotive motif functions as a powerful cultural signifier, evoking the transformative era of steam-powered transportation when engineering achievement merged with aesthetic ambition, when machinery itself became subject to ornamental treatment. Trains traditionally symbolize journey, progress, connection between distant places, and the movement of goods that enables commerce and cultural exchange—appropriate metaphors for confectionery products that travel from origin to consumer. The chromatic choice of verdigris teal carries its own symbolic weight, suggesting oxidation processes that occur over time, thereby encoding age, patina, and the value accumulated through temporal passage rather than newness alone. Gold typography introduces alchemical symbolism—the transformation of base materials into precious substance—while simultaneously signifying premium quality through cultural associations with wealth, achievement, and special occasion. The technical illustration style references an era when draftsmen created drawings of extraordinary precision and beauty, positioning this contemporary product within lineages of skilled making and professional craft. The matte, uncoated paper substrate communicates authenticity and material honesty, rejecting the glossy surfaces associated with mass production in favor of textures suggesting handcraft and limited production. The compositional staging with dramatic chiaroscuro lighting elevates the commercial object into still life tradition, a genre historically concerned with meditation on material goods, transience, and the pleasures of sensory experience. The overlapping arrangement of multiple boxes suggests abundance and collectibility, inviting repeated purchase and sustained brand relationship.

A collaborative chocolate between a locomotive with more than 130 years of history and an up-and-coming, well acclaimed chocolatier. The trains are drawn with respect for railroad fans and its history, based on photographs of the actual trains taken by the designers themselves. The chocolate has a playful design to it that expresses the route on which the train runs as a maze. The deep green symbolizes the trade color of the train and the color of matcha chocolate. By consuming it while enjoying the maze, they can visit the route and background of the areas and cultures where the train runs.
