Cheng Xiao's architectural vision for the Exhibition Center Building encodes profound cultural and archetypal meanings through its formal vocabulary and material choices. The dramatic cantilever may be understood as embodying the archetypal gesture of emergence or transcendence, representing humanity's aspiration to overcome gravitational limitations and reach toward elevated states of knowledge or being. The translucent upper volume, glowing with captured daylight, traditionally associates with qualities of purity, clarity, and illumination, suggesting the exhibition center's role as a space of enlightenment where visitors encounter new understanding. The vertical fin elements articulating the facade create rhythmic patterns that could reference the linear qualities of water movement, wave formations, or the geometric precision found in marine biology, connecting the structure symbolically to its oceanic context and thematic programming. The chromatic dialogue between silver-white above and charcoal-black below participates in universal symbolic systems of light and shadow, spirit and matter, aspiration and foundation, encoding the building's dual nature as both grounded institution and transcendent cultural vessel. The angular geometry throughout suggests dynamic transformation and movement rather than static permanence, perhaps symbolizing the fluid nature of marine environments and the ongoing processes of discovery and learning that exhibition spaces facilitate. The monumental stairway functions as a threshold element, marking the ritual transition from profane exterior space into the sacred precinct of cultural engagement. The phenomenological experience of approaching and entering creates a processional sequence that elevates visitors psychologically, preparing consciousness for meaningful encounter with exhibition content. Such spatial choreography draws upon ancient temple traditions while expressing contemporary architectural language, demonstrating how enduring symbolic patterns continue informing significant public buildings.
The Exhibition Center is located in Huangdao District, Qingdao. To its west is Mount Dazhu, and to its east is Lingshan Bay, facing the Yellow Sea. It is a new industrial park specializing in the marine industry and smart technology. The Exhibition Center is not only a core building of the new district, but is also representative of the image and position of the entire intelligent park, and has unique importance. Main roads, metro tracks, and other large-scale urban features form the background of the Exhibition Center.
