Hacienda Summer House

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2021

The central positioning of the distinctive thorny-trunked tree within Hany Saad's architectural composition activates profound archetypal associations with the axis mundi, the world tree that connects earthly and celestial realms across numerous cultural traditions. This vegetal protagonist, likely a ceiba or silk floss tree species traditionally regarded as sacred in various cultures, rises as a living column mediating between the geometric order of human construction and the organic patterns of nature. The bilateral symmetry organizing the composition evokes classical ideals of balance and harmony, suggesting stability and ordered contemplation appropriate to domestic sanctuary. The chromatic dialogue between warm amber interior light and cool ultramarine twilight sky encodes the threshold moment between day and night, activity and rest, public and private realms. Timber screening elements reference traditional mashrabiya and similar filtering devices found across warm-climate architectural traditions, symbolizing the mediation between interior sanctuary and exterior environment, between revelation and concealment. The stepped horizontal massing may be read as ascending planes suggesting aspiration while remaining grounded in earth through stone base materials. White surfaces carry associations of purity, clarity, and luminosity, while the warm wood tones introduce organic life and temporal warmth. The carefully composed landscape suggests cultivated paradise, the enclosed garden archetype representing human ordering of nature into meaningful sanctuary. The precise blue hour timing of the photograph captures liminal temporality, that threshold moment charged with transitional energy when one state transforms into another, suggesting the building itself as threshold between worldly concerns and domestic refuge.

A laid-back lifestyle that is natural to the beach and sea-side is coupled with modern luxury to ensure relaxing ambience of comfort. The open space presented by Hany Saad provides a balance between serenity and tranquility with this modern-chic environment capsulating comfort. This house is designed to give its residents as much of the coastal experience as possible, maximizing the access to the sea view to the promise of a wholesome beach retreat. Designed to provide sanctuary and retreat after a day at the beach. Allowing one to be enveloped by the soft minimal color palette.
