MG iSmart Infotainment System HMI

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

SAIC and Star's interface visualization operates as a rich symbolic narrative of contemporary mobility culture, where the visual language communicates values of technological mastery harmonized with natural aspiration. The mountainous landscape visible beyond the vehicle interior functions as an archetypal symbol of journey, aspiration, and the human desire for exploration and freedom—mountains across cultures representing transcendence, achievement, and the meeting point between earthly experience and higher realms. The golden hour lighting bathes this distant vista in warmth associated with transition, reflection, and the liminal space between day and evening, suggesting the meditative quality of travel itself. Within the cockpit, the circular instrument cluster may be interpreted as a contemporary mandala form—the circle representing wholeness, completion, and the cyclical nature of journeys that depart and return. The concentric rings of information echo ancient cosmological diagrams where nested spheres indicated ordered understanding of complex systems. The modular, card-based interface architecture suggests accessibility and democratic design philosophy, where information presents itself in digestible portions rather than overwhelming totality, embodying contemporary values of user-centered thinking. Color choices carry significant meaning: the cerulean blues employed throughout interface elements traditionally connote trust, reliability, and clarity of thought, while amber accents in weather displays connect to warmth, optimism, and natural sunlight. The prominent placement of climate control, weather, and navigation modules speaks to fundamental human concerns with comfort, environmental awareness, and wayfinding—primal needs translated through technological mediation. The steering wheel positioned at center-right occupies a symbolically powerful position as the interface between human intention and mechanical response, the red stitching detail adding a vital accent traditionally associated with energy, passion, and precision. The overall composition invites contemplation of how thoughtfully designed technology can enhance rather than diminish our connection to both vehicle capability and the natural world beyond.

SAIC's brand MG was challenged with a new market rollout and needed a custom HMI solution to support this strategic initiative. The design embraces new technology trends centered around connectivity digital touchpoints and smart assistants with an intuitive interface that strengthens consumers' emotional relationships with both the vehicle and the MG brand.
