House in Akashi Residential

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2021

The vertical timber screen of House in Akashi Residential operates as a threshold veil mediating between realms of public visibility and domestic sanctuary, encoding fundamental architectural archetypes of protection, permeability, and welcome within its material language. The rhythmic repetition of upright elements evokes primordial shelter forms from reed screens to palisade walls to forest groves, activating deep associations with sanctuary and enclosure found across human building traditions. The warm chromatic register of the natural wood carries symbolic warmth extending beyond mere temperature, suggesting hospitality, organic authenticity, and connection to living materials that resonate with biophilic human preferences for natural surfaces over synthetic ones. The entry portal functions as classic threshold archetype, a liminal space marking transition between outside and inside, between social presentation and intimate dwelling, the recessed shadow creating psychological preparation for passage between worlds. The perforated section introduces controlled transparency that speaks to values of measured openness, allowing interior inhabitants glimpses outward while filtering external gazes inward, a sophisticated negotiation of privacy and connection. Trees emerging above the roofline serve as symbols of vitality and growth, suggesting that this dwelling nurtures life within its protective embrace, the contrast between organic irregular canopy and geometric precise facade encoding dialogue between nature and culture central to architectural meaning. The horizontal ground plane of pale concrete establishes foundation and welcome simultaneously, its neutral expanse creating receptive approach that honors arrival while the warm wall above promises shelter. The unified material palette communicates coherent identity and intentional craft, suggesting inhabitants who value authenticity and thoughtful making over superficial decoration.

House in Akashi is a minimalist house designed to immerse one with nature. The house is divided into three zones, based on purpose and privacy, each with a garden and different concept. The first courtyard has a Japanese-style room for family, and a yard with kitchen garden. The second is a semi-public living dining space and a yard for viewing. Finally, bedrooms and the dry area provide for privacy and laundry. Through the courtyards, the plants, soil, wind and sky are always in view allowing nature into the house, blurring the lines between inside and outside.
