Strata Naha Hotel

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

The living tree functioning as the compositional axis of Uds Ltd.'s Hotel carries profound archetypal resonance across numerous cultural traditions, representing the axis mundi or world tree that connects earthly and celestial realms, its branching structure echoing the life force that animates all organic growth while its placement within the constructed interior suggests humanity's enduring need to maintain connection with natural processes even within urban contexts. The coral limestone employed throughout the space carries rich associations with oceanic origins and geological time, these ancient calcium carbonate formations speaking to cycles of life, death, and transformation that extend far beyond human temporal scales, while their pale coloration evokes purity, clarity, and the bleaching power of tropical sunlight. The material palette as a whole articulates a sophisticated dialogue between craft tradition and natural process: the polished wooden reception counter demonstrates human capacity for refinement and precision, while its organic root-form pedestals honor the raw power and beauty of growth patterns that exceed human design capability, suggesting an aesthetic philosophy that values both cultivation and wildness. The traditional textile patterns visible on the cushions introduce iconographic elements that may reference specific regional weaving traditions, their striped compositions potentially encoding cultural meanings related to social identity, protective symbolism, or cosmological orientation that would be legible to viewers familiar with these craft vocabularies. The rectangular form of the planting bed creates a geometric frame around the organic irregularity of both tree and stone, establishing a threshold condition that marks the boundary between cultivated interior space and the untamed natural world, inviting contemplation of how architecture might mediate rather than exclude natural forces. The warm quality of the artificial lighting, contrasted with the cool blue of twilight visible beyond the glass, creates a chromatic dialogue between sanctuary and world, interior warmth and exterior vastness, suggesting the fundamental hospitality function of providing refuge and comfort to travelers. The spatial procession from casual seating through garden threshold to formal reception counter may be understood as an experiential narrative preparing visitors for transformation from their journeying state into their status as honored guests within a carefully constructed realm of beauty and repose.

The project plans to create a unique 'city resort' hotel in the heart of Naha-city, Okinawa. The name "Strata" was inspired by the land's rich nature and culture, which means layers of earth; it aims to discover layers of preexisting cultural gems and adding new layers of value to the ongoing cultural contents. The project also aimed to create a hotel that connects with the local community; original textiles are incorporated in a modern interior design by collaborating with local traditional artisans.
