Oehme's Werkelkueche Toy operates as a symbolic microcosm of the workshop, encoding cultural values around craft, making, and the dignity of productive work translated into childhood experience. The perforated green panels evoke the organizational systems of traditional workbenches and tool storage, suggesting that children deserve access to genuine tools and authentic making experiences rather than simplified imitations. Green, traditionally associated with growth, renewal, and natural harmony, positions the activity station within narratives of development and organic learning processes. The birch wood carries connotations of Northern forests, sustainability, and connection to natural materials that ground the child in sensory authenticity. The stepped architectural form recalls classical podiums and stages, elevating the child's creative work to a position of honor and visibility. The circular perforations function as a geometric pattern suggesting infinite possibility and reconfiguration, each hole a potential connection point representing choices and creative decisions. The bilateral positioning of two children around the central object activates archetypal imagery of collaboration, shared endeavor, and the social construction of knowledge. The mallet, a fundamental tool archetype, connects the child to ancestral traditions of building and shaping the physical world. The gray backdrop within the domestic setting creates an interesting tension between documentation and lived experience, suggesting how design objects exist simultaneously as aesthetic propositions and practical realities. The overall composition suggests a philosophy where childhood is understood as genuine participation in cultural practices rather than mere preparation for future productivity, honoring the present moment of making and discovery.
The Werkelkueche is a gender-open activity workstation that enables children to immerse themselves in free play worlds. It combines the formal and aesthetic features of children's kitchens and workbenches. Therefore the Werkelkueche offer diverse possibilities to play. The curved plywood worktop can be used as a sink, workshop or ski slope. The side compartments can provide storage and hiding space or bake crispy rolls. With the help of the colorful and interchangeable tools, children can realize their ideas and imitate the world of adults in a playful way.
