Fuzhou Marriott Riverside Hotel

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Bo Liu's Hotel interior operates as a sophisticated spatial text encoding multiple layers of cultural meaning through its material choices, formal arrangements, and symbolic elements. The central decorative panel functions as the primary iconographic anchor, its abstracted landscape imagery drawing upon centuries of artistic tradition depicting idealized natural realms where mountains rise through mist and clouds suggest celestial realms, here translated into contemporary geometric language while maintaining archetypal resonance with themes of aspiration, transcendence, and harmony between human creation and natural order. The vertical pilasters flanking this central composition evoke classical architectural vocabulary associated with stability, permanence, and civic dignity, their stone materiality suggesting geological time and enduring value. The chromatic strategy carries significant meaning: the predominant neutral palette of grey, taupe, and cream suggests refined restraint and sophisticated understatement valued across many cultural traditions, while the strategic insertions of deep blue-green reference water symbolism associated with flow, prosperity, and life force. The circular ceiling elements introduce geometric symbolism of wholeness and heaven, their dark coloration creating productive tension with the illuminated pendants suggesting contained light or captured celestial bodies. The furniture arrangements encode social meaning through their configuration of intimate groupings within expansive space, suggesting hospitality cultures where guests are offered both community and privacy. The floral arrangements in their black vessels present palm fronds as symbols of victory and triumph alongside orchids traditionally associated with refinement, virtue, and elegant accomplishment. The herringbone floor pattern introduces subtle geometric complexity suggesting craftsmanship and attention to detail that elevates functional surface into decorative statement, while the transparent glass balustrades at the mezzanine level symbolize openness and visual connection across spatial boundaries.
