Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
Jun Ding's architectural vision encoded within this mixed-use development reveals layered symbolic resonances operating across scales from material to metropolitan. The undulating parametric façade may be interpreted as evoking natural phenomena, specifically the fluid dynamics of wind-shaped sand dunes, flowing water, or billowing fabric, its continuous curvilinear geometry suggesting organic growth patterns and biomimetic design philosophies that position architecture as extension rather than opposition to natural systems. The diamond perforation pattern carries associations with traditional lattice screens found across numerous cultural traditions, where perforated membranes mediate between interior and exterior, public and private, functioning simultaneously as filter and threshold, the repetitive geometry potentially symbolizing interconnection, networks, and the mathematical underpinnings of natural beauty. The vertical glass tower rising from this organic base establishes archetypal symbolism of aspiration and achievement, its transparent surfaces suggesting openness, honesty, and the modern value of visibility, while its height connotes ambition and forward momentum. The cascading water feature introduces elemental symbolism of purification, renewal, and abundance, water traditionally representing life force, prosperity, and continuous flow, its white foam against darker pools creating visual metaphor for energy emerging from stillness. The chromatic dominance of white throughout the curved façade carries associations of purity, clarity, new beginnings, and celestial light, while the warm golden tones of adjacent structures ground the composition in earthly materiality. The compositional arrangement, wherein organic curvature meets geometric precision, may symbolize harmonious integration of nature and technology, tradition and innovation, yielding architectural form that honors both computational possibility and humanistic warmth through its graceful synthesis of opposing formal languages.
The Pingjiang Times Project is an urban complex integrating a high-end hotel, retail shopping mall, serviced apartments, and office space. Inspired by the movement and flow of water, the concentric circular geometry continues through the landscape platforms that extend throughout the site. The waving façade design creates an organic feel and ties project to the significant role that water plays in this region of China. The project seamlessly interfaces with the surrounding context along the river, realizing the dream of "developing across rivers" to "supporting the development of rivers".
