Architectural symbolism permeates Peng Architects Inc.'s Nam Kwong Diehu Center Complex through its twin tower configuration, which traditionally represents duality, partnership, and complementary forces in balance. The helical rotation of the forms evokes the spiral as a universal symbol of growth, evolution, and cosmic energy found across cultures from the nautilus shell sacred to ancient traditions to the double helix of life itself. White as the dominant chromatic choice carries associations of purity, clarity, and new beginnings while the integrated green vegetation introduces symbolic references to renewal, vitality, and the reconciliation of human construction with natural systems. The towers' apparent inclination toward one another in their upper reaches may be read as architectural gesture suggesting mutual support, attraction, or dialogue between paired elements, evoking archetypal themes of relationship and complementarity. The horizontal banding creates a visual rhythm suggesting temporal progression, growth rings, or the accumulation of experience over time. The crystalline crowns catching light at the pinnacles function symbolically as aspirational gestures toward illumination and transcendence, their transparency suggesting openness and the admission of light as metaphor for wisdom or spiritual elevation. The unified base from which both towers emerge reinforces themes of common ground and shared foundation despite individual expression. The integration of living plants throughout the vertical extent introduces biophilic symbolism suggesting the building as living organism rather than static object, participating in cycles of growth and seasonal change. The plaza level with its congregation of human figures suggests community and gathering, grounding the monumental aspiration in human scale and social purpose.
Located in the CBD area of the city, the project is next to Diehu Lake, the main landscape of the central axis. Taking advantage of the natural landscape of Diehu Lake, the twin towers are inspired by the form of a butterfly. With the objective of the backyard of Shanghai and Qidong Citizens' Leisure Circle, as well as a great healthy ideal community, the complex will become a healthy community featuring ecological residences with fitness parks. The project integrates a new lifestyle and opens a new chapter in Qidong with a butterfly form to express the inheritance of the times.
