Green-Backed Tit Nesting Plan Art Installation and Pavilion

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022

YI-CHANG CHEN's pavilion operates as a richly layered symbolic construction drawing upon universal archetypes of shelter, transformation, and the sacred threshold. The radial arrangement of vertical fins evokes multiple simultaneous readings: the protective wings of a parent bird encircling eggs, the petals of a flower opening to reveal its generative center, or a crown denoting sacred space set apart from ordinary experience. The semicircular arch functions as a classic threshold symbol, marking the boundary between exterior and interior, public and private, profane and sacred space. The circular arch form carries associations across numerous traditions with passage, transformation, and ceremonial transition. Within this protective enclosure, the woven lattice work explicitly references nest construction, activating archetypal associations with nurture, gestation, patience, and the instinctive creativity demonstrated throughout the natural world. The suspended ovoid form at the installation's luminous core suggests the egg as symbol of potentiality, containing within its shell the promise of new life and transformation. The warm amber illumination carries strong symbolic resonance with hearth fire, domestic safety, and the warmth of welcome, its color temperature psychologically associated with comfort, intimacy, and belonging. The contrast between this interior warmth and the cool twilight exterior reinforces the symbolic reading of sanctuary amid exposure, refuge amid vastness. The water element visible through the structure introduces associations with reflection, depth, the unconscious, and emotional fluidity. The vertical aspiration of the fins reaching skyward suggests spiritual reaching while their protective inward curve maintains connection to earth and shelter. The processional approach via wooden boardwalk creates a ritualized pathway, transforming simple entry into mindful progression toward a place of contemplation and refuge.

The nest-like installation is created for visitors to get into it, take a rest and find their inner peace. Lighting design starts from the human vision instead of glowing the installation itself. As an art installation which people can get inside, design team focuses on putting attention to create the illumination balance between the environment and the visitors' visual effect. Lighting fixture with proper light distribution and cut-off angle are integrated with the structure of the installation to build a glare-free ambiance which helps to sustain the tranquility of the Sun Moon Lake.
