Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022
Within the symbolic vocabulary of hospitality architecture, Bo Liu's celebrated interior design operates as a sophisticated meditation on threshold, welcome, and the transformative potential of arrival spaces. The dominant vertical orientation of the metal battens carries archetypal associations with aspiration, growth, and the connection between earthly and celestial realms—a spatial gesture that elevates the guest experience from mundane transit to meaningful passage. The perforated column surfaces, with their irregular rectangular apertures, evoke traditional screen architecture that has long symbolized the permeable boundary between public and private realms in refined dwelling traditions, suggesting both protection and invitation, concealment and revelation. The warm golden chromatic field activates deep cultural associations with prosperity, illumination, and sacred presence—gold serving across numerous traditions as the color of transcendence, hospitality, and honored welcome. The bilateral symmetry of the composition references classical architectural principles of order, balance, and ceremonial dignity, positioning the arriving guest along a central axis that implies importance and intentional procession. The interplay of light and shadow across the slatted surfaces introduces temporal symbolism, marking the passage of hours through shifting illumination patterns and suggesting that the space itself responds to natural rhythms. The threshold position of the design—neither fully exterior nor completely interior—activates liminal symbolism associated with transformation, the pause between states, and the potential for renewal that hospitality spaces ideally offer. Material choices carry their own symbolic weight: the cool permanence of stone grounding the composition, the warm glow of metal suggesting refinement and craft, the pristine white ceiling evoking openness and clarity. Together, these elements compose a visual narrative of arrival as ceremony, welcome as honor, and the hotel lobby as a space of transition into experiences of comfort and care.
