MontGras Handcrafted Wine Packaging

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022

Encoded within Ximena Ureta's packaging design lies a sophisticated symbolic vocabulary that communicates artisanal authenticity through carefully calibrated visual signifiers, the gestural ink brushwork adorning each label functions as indexical mark, a trace of human presence that counters mass-production anonymity with evidence of the hand's direct engagement with surface, these calligraphic gestures evoke multiple cultural traditions simultaneously, suggesting the spontaneous confidence of Eastern ink painting where brushstroke reveals character while also resonating with Western abstract expressionism's valorization of authentic gesture, the organic forms might be read as landscape elements, wind-bent grasses, undulating terrain, or the gnarled forms of ancient vines, connecting product to place through abstracted visual metaphor rather than literal representation, the numerical sequence one through five establishes ordering while suggesting limited production and careful curation, each number rendered in warm red carries associations of vitality, passion, and the wine's essential character, wax seals function as historical signifiers of authenticity and protection, recalling traditions of correspondence and commerce where such seals guaranteed integrity and origin, the material staging upon weathered timber activates narratives of age, patience, and natural process, the wood's visible history of use and exposure suggesting the temporal investments required for quality viticulture, the dark glass vessels themselves carry protective symbolism, guardians of precious contents against degrading light, their forms suggesting both classical amphora traditions and contemporary sophistication, vine leaves introduced as compositional elements provide botanical authentication connecting finished product to living source plant, the overall chromatic restraint with monochromatic labels and deep earth tones communicates refinement and confidence, suggesting contents of sufficient quality to require no visual excess

MontGras Handcrafted is an enology based project that pursues the production of distinctive wines made out of rare grape varieties harvested in 2020. Each wine is the product of a unique combination of the particular weather and land conditions of five Chilean valleys and of five different wine makers. This packaging is a creative way of following the particular personality of each wine while expressing the common ideas behind the project.
