Rizhao Bailuwan Cherry Blossom Town Art and Cultural Space

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022

Curving stone walls inscribe symbolic meanings into the landscape through their serpentine geometry, evoking the fundamental archetype of the path as life journey, where each bend conceals what lies ahead while revealing new vistas at every turn. The dry-stone construction methodology carries deep cultural resonance, connecting this contemporary intervention to ancestral building traditions wherein communities shaped their environments through patient accumulation of locally gathered materials, each stone placed by human hands in acts of care and craft. The choice of cherry blossoms as the primary horticultural element activates profound symbolic associations across multiple cultural frameworks: impermanence and the acceptance of transience, renewal and spring awakening, beauty heightened by its ephemeral nature, and the gathering of community in celebration of seasonal cycles. The solitary vermillion figure functions as a symbolic anchor, the red garment traditionally associated with vitality, celebration, and auspicious beginnings standing out as a point of concentrated life energy moving through the softer pink and earth-toned environment. The serpentine wall forms themselves suggest multiple readings: the flowing curves echo water courses and natural drainage patterns, they reference the protective embrace of encircling arms, and they create a labyrinthine quality invoking ancient traditions of meditative walking paths designed to facilitate contemplation. The numerical presence of three major wall sections visible in the composition resonates with triadic symbolism suggesting dynamic balance, progression, and completeness found across numerous cultural traditions. The elevated viewpoint positions the observer in a contemplative remove, suggesting the perspective of overview that comes with reflection and understanding rather than immersed experience alone. Material symbolism emerges through the dialogue between permanent stone, enduring through generations, and ephemeral blossoms lasting mere days, encoding meditations on time, memory, and the relationship between constructed culture and natural cycles.

The client proposed to bring a natural but artistic atmosphere to the site. The project respects the original natural mountain atmosphere and the essence of the courtyard. It features three elements: The design of a pure cherry courtyard, elevated in the sky. A base of emerging curved textured walls made from local granite boulders form a strong image and blur the boundary of vertical wall and horizontal path. Winding roads covered in cherry blossom petals complete the impression of the forest valley.
