Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022
Sheng Menghua's model room interior operates as a sophisticated spatial text wherein architectural and decorative elements encode cultural values surrounding cultivation, aspiration, and the harmonious integration of material prosperity with intellectual refinement. The commanding vertical dimension, emphasized by the double-height volume and the descending spiral chandelier, may be interpreted through archetypal frameworks as an axis connecting earthly dwelling to celestial aspiration—the spiral form itself carrying ancient associations with cosmic energy, evolutionary development, and the journey of consciousness through material existence. The bookshelf wall, rising monumentally to fill the right portion of the composition, functions symbolically as more than storage: it presents the archetype of the scholar's library, the repository of accumulated wisdom, where each illuminated compartment becomes a reliquary for objects of meaning and volumes of knowledge, suggesting inhabitants whose identity encompasses worldly cultivation and intellectual engagement. The warm LED illumination integrated within this framework may evoke traditional associations of light with wisdom, understanding, and the dispelling of ignorance—each glowing shelf a small shrine to human achievement. The abstract artwork's horizontal striations in earth tones could reference geological time, textile traditions, or the layered accumulation of experience and memory that constitutes cultural identity, introducing contemplative depth that rewards sustained attention. The organic labyrinthine pattern of the area rug introduces symbolic complexity: the maze or meander pattern carries cross-cultural associations with life's journey, the path of initiation, and the mysteries of existence navigated through patient progression rather than direct assault. Color semiotics reinforce the overall reading: the warm neutral palette of taupe, cream, bronze, and gold suggests refinement without ostentation, prosperity expressed through quality and restraint rather than chromatic excess, while metallic accents traditionally connote solar energy, permanence, and accumulated value. The careful balance between vertical aspiration and horizontal grounding, between grand gesture and intimate detail, encodes perhaps a philosophy of dwelling that honors both transcendent ambition and earthly presence.
The overall design of the sample room is restrained, where light is integrated into the living room in a peaceful way, thus, weakening the quiet space. The warmth of wood in the master bedroom brings a restrained sense of tranquility and calmness, and accessories and lamps inject an artistic atmosphere into the space. The simple rooms seem to be like their ordinary demands for life, and everything is comfortable.
