Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022
Yeak design's Saturn Cat Bed operates as a sophisticated visual text encoding multiple layers of meaning through its formal vocabulary, material choices, and presentation context, inviting interpretation through both traditional iconographic frameworks and contemporary design semiotics. The spherical form carries profound archetypal resonance, evoking the primordial egg symbolizing potentiality and protected gestation across mythological traditions from the cosmic egg of creation narratives to the alchemical vessel of transformation, while simultaneously suggesting planetary bodies and the celestial mechanics referenced in the design's titular association with the ringed planet. The tessellated wood surface functions as a meditation on unity within multiplicity, each unique segment contributing individual character while surrendering to larger formal coherence, a visual metaphor for community, collaboration, and the integration of diverse elements into harmonious wholes. The circular aperture operates symbolically as threshold, portal, and invitation, marking the boundary between exterior social space and interior refuge, a fundamental architectural symbol appearing across cultures from cave entrances to cathedral doorways to the domestic hearth. Warm brown tones carry associations with earth, stability, nourishment, and organic connection to natural cycles, while the contrasting blue spheres introduce sky, water, spirit, and transcendence into the material vocabulary, establishing a complementary dialogue between grounded presence and elevated aspiration. The scattered arrangement of accessory spheres suggests constellation patterns, planetary systems, or the playful disorder of natural abundance, introducing dynamism into the otherwise stable composition. Material honesty in visible wood grain celebrates authenticity and craft tradition in an era of synthetic simulation, positioning the work within value systems privileging natural materials and human skill over industrial reproduction. The protective enclosure form speaks to universal themes of shelter, care, and the nurturing instinct that extends across species boundaries, transforming functional pet furniture into a meditation on relationship, responsibility, and the domestic bonds that define meaningful dwelling.
Saturn is a pet house with a modern style. Making full use of surplus materials of modern wood processing, this product reduces material waste and adheres to the maxim of sustainability. Moreover, it integrates elegance and utilization for a stunning view of modern home space. The design team is inspired by the surplus materials during the production of modern furniture, which is premium in quality but cannot be reused for its sizes. Thus, they refer to the football and assemble the wood into a regular round shape.
