Kyle MertensMeyer's Wine Cellar installation operates as a sophisticated spatial allegory wherein the radial organization of stored bottles creates an architectural metaphor for abundance radiating from a sacred center, the circular dome format traditionally associated with celestial vaults and cosmic wholeness transforms utilitarian storage into a contemplative sanctuary suggesting that the preservation of wine represents a form of temporal transcendence where human craftsmanship captures and holds time itself within sealed vessels, the peacock reference embedded in the design title activates rich symbolic associations including immortality beauty pride and the all-seeing eyes of divine watchfulness that appear in the bird's spectacular tail feathers here translated into the circular glass bases of countless bottles functioning as luminous ocelli gazing inward toward the ceremonial center, the vertical axis marked by the central pedestal establishes a world-axis or axis mundi connecting earthly abundance below with celestial illumination above creating a cosmological diagram wherein wine itself becomes a mediating substance between material and spiritual realms echoing ancient associations between fermented beverages and divine communion, the mirror-like floor surface may suggest the hermetic principle of correspondence between above and below doubling the visible world and implying hidden depths beneath apparent reality, color symbolism operates through the progression from warm golden light at the apex suggesting solar energy divine presence and spiritual illumination gradually cooling toward steel blues and earthly shadows below mapping a descent from celestial to terrestrial realms, the mathematical precision of the radiating bottle arrangement evokes sacred geometry traditions wherein divine order manifests through proportion and repetition while the organic curves soften pure mathematics into biomorphic forms suggesting nature's own organizational principles, numerologically the countless bottles arranged in concentric rings may evoke infinity and eternal return while the singular central pedestal establishes unity from which multiplicity emerges.
The Peacock's ancient craftsmanship and contemporary fabrication create an intentional joining of past and present. The cellar comprises one thousand individually handcrafted blue-glazed terra cotta tiles, glistening like the Peacock's feathers. The design team used 3d printing to prototype before working with artisans from the historic porcelain town of Jingdezhen, China to craft the final tiles. Every tile's internal LED illuminates bottles individually, this creates a soft ambiance throughout the cellar. Over three years of fabrication, the team gained great respect for the artisans.
