Chengdu NBD Centre Architecture

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2022

QUAD studio's architectural vision for the Chengdu NBD Centre deploys a symbolic vocabulary rooted in natural morphogenesis, the three towers rising from their shared base like stems from a single root system, suggesting organic unity achieved through differentiation rather than uniformity. The curvilinear formal language carries connotations of growth, fluidity, and life force, standing in deliberate contrast to the rigid geometries of conventional commercial architecture that form the contextual backdrop, a compositional strategy that positions the project as harbinger of evolutionary possibility within the urban landscape. The tripartite tower arrangement may evoke archetypal associations with sacred trinities and dynamic equilibrium, the number three representing completion and balance across numerous cultural traditions while avoiding the static symmetry of paired elements. The excavated void at the building's center functions as a symbolic heart or womb, a space of warmth, gathering, and generation sheltered within the protective embrace of the surrounding structure, the warm amber illumination suggesting hearth fire or solar energy contained within crystalline form. The waterfront setting activates ancient symbolic associations between water and transformation, reflection and contemplation, the mirroring surface creating a threshold zone between the material building and its immaterial double. The twilight temporal setting positions the architecture at a liminal moment between day and night, activity and rest, suggesting cyclical rhythm and transitional states. The contrast between the cool exterior envelope and warm interior illumination encodes fundamental dualities of public and private, exterior and interior, rational structure and emotional refuge. The vertical aspiration of the towers participates in the universal symbolic tradition of ascent, while their organic profiles soften any associations with aggressive dominance or technological hubris, suggesting instead a vision of human ambition harmonized with natural principles of growth and adaptation.

Being the first development in this new financial district. To maximise frontage towards the Jinjiang River, the design pushed the twin tower toward the north western corner of the site allowing visual connection to Jiaozi Park. Below ground the design allowed multiple pedestrian connection to the adjacent plots and metro lines. It is divided into 3 distinctive sections, Below Ground, Podium and Main Towers all interconnected by pockets of public realm. A large sunken civic plaza draws visitors to the ground level where multi-level linkages take visitors to retail and cultural attraction.
