Nanhua Glimmer Public Landscape

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2022

Men-An Pan's landscape design encodes profound symbolic dimensions through its orchestration of elemental forces and spatial narratives, with mist functioning as a primary signifying element suggesting liminality, transition, and the veil between material and immaterial realms. Water vapor has long served across cultures as a symbol of transformation and spiritual presence, its ephemeral nature embodying impermanence while its rising movement suggests aspiration and transcendence. The serpentine pathway configuration recalls ancient symbolic associations with river courses representing life's journey, their winding progress suggesting that meaningful destinations are reached through circuitous rather than direct routes. Curvilinear forms traditionally carry feminine archetypal resonance, associated with receptivity, flow, and organic growth, while their contrast with the orthogonal elements of surrounding infrastructure may suggest integration of complementary principles. The elevated viewpoint positions the observer in a contemplative relationship to the scene, evoking the traditional scholar's perspective in classical garden painting where overview facilitates philosophical reflection. Mountains visible in the distance activate deep cultural symbolism as places of wisdom, stability, and spiritual aspiration, their presence establishing cosmic orientation and grounding the designed landscape within larger natural systems. The solitary figure suggests the archetypal journeyer, the individual pursuing personal discovery within a supportive yet mysterious environment. Trees function as axis mundi symbols connecting earth and sky, their vertical presence balancing the horizontal flow of pathways and mist. The interplay of concealment and revelation created by drifting vapor evokes the aesthetic category of mystery, suggesting that landscape appreciation involves patient attention to phenomena that emerge and dissolve rather than static contemplation of fixed forms. Green dominates the chromatic field, carrying associations with renewal, growth, hope, and natural harmony across diverse cultural traditions.

The site for Nanhua Glimmer locates in Pingtung, Taiwan. The school campus has transformed into the landscape park for the community and the elderly. The campus celebrates the regional nature features and translates them into geometric forms. The selected variety of plants within the campus presents an ecological education opportunity for the public. The mist and glimmer resemble the collective memory of the locals at nights, creating radiances around the street lights afar. The recreated misty scene brings up the visual memories of gazing afar towards the mountain covered in mist and clouds.
