Kanji Posters

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2022

ALICE XI ZONG's visual identity system within Kanji Posters activates multiple symbolic registers that speak to cultural synthesis and the evolution of written communication across technological eras. The prominent calligraphic character functions as an archetypal threshold symbol, representing the meeting point between Eastern philosophical traditions of brush-based mark-making—where the gesture itself carries spiritual significance—and Western typographic conventions of systematic information design. The luminous gradient sphere may evoke celestial symbolism, suggesting cosmic wholeness, cyclical completeness, and the universal nature of human aesthetic response that transcends specific linguistic knowledge. The gold and teal brushstroke introduces alchemical color associations: gold traditionally representing wisdom, illumination, and transformation while teal bridges the material and spiritual realms in various cultural frameworks. The deliberate tension between organic brushwork and geometric precision creates a visual metaphor for the contemporary condition of cultural negotiation, where traditional practices must find authentic expression within digital environments. The phrase "OUT OF FOCUS" operates as conceptual framing, potentially referencing the experience of encounter with unfamiliar writing systems where form communicates before meaning resolves—a liminal state of aesthetic appreciation preceding semantic comprehension. The dot matrices and linear accents reference the underlying grid structures of digital display technologies, acknowledging the technological substrate through which such designs now circulate globally. The installation against raw concrete suggests archetypal themes of permanence versus ephemerality, the enduring material of architecture hosting the luminous immateriality of the illuminated image. This layered symbolic construction invites contemplation of how visual communication might honor heritage while embracing transformation.

The Kanji shapes and strokes represent the initial state and infinite existence of the surroundings. Inspired by the brushstrokes of Chinese calligraphy, the study of contextual ideas, the blend of styles, and cultural attention, the inclusive mentality of the spaces in between the shapes conferred by the strokes shows exquisite elegance and luxuriant cultural implications of Chinese calligraphy. Each poster is made out of a combination of the traditional Chinese element, bringing all the inspirations together and creating a unique, delicate Chinese style of impressionism.
