Borromei Loft Residential

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2023

Within the spatial vocabulary of contemporary residential architecture, Barbara Fassoni's Borromei Loft Residential embodies the archetypal transformation narrative where industrial structure achieves domestic rebirth through careful material alchemy. The double-height void functions as a vertical threshold between earthbound daily existence and celestial aspiration, the expansive glazed ceiling establishing symbolic connection between interior sanctuary and infinite sky beyond. The floating staircase operates as a powerful ascension metaphor, its cantilevered treads suggesting passage between realms while the zigzag form evokes the universal journey motif of progressive elevation through effort. The circular wall luminaire reads as solar symbol, its warm amber glow recalling hearth fire traditions while its geometric perfection suggests contemplative mandala qualities that invite meditation upon wholeness and centered being. The extensive library walls encode values of intellectual cultivation and cultural transmission, books serving as traditional symbols of accumulated wisdom and civilizational continuity. The living tree introduces vital organic presence into the geometric order, representing renewal, growth, and the integration of nature within human dwelling that connects to ancient garden-paradise traditions. The achromatic palette dominated by white, grey, and black establishes timeless sophistication while allowing the chromatic accents of book spines to function as concentrated meaning-carriers representing diverse human knowledge domains. Steel and glass together symbolize modernity's transparency and structural honesty while concrete grounds the composition in materiality and permanence. The horizontal repose of the seating arrangement beneath the vertical drama above creates harmonic tension between rest and aspiration, earthly comfort and spiritual reaching. The mezzanine level visible through glass suggests layered consciousness, upper realms of thought accessible yet requiring ascent through dedicated effort. Light itself becomes the space's primary symbolic medium, zenithal illumination traditionally associated with divine presence here democratized through architectural means into daily domestic experience.

The challenge of this project was to be able to re-propose the succession of secret spaces typical of Milan's historic canter, going beyond the ancient building structure through a contemporary design that would guarantee a new atmosphere. Being able to ensure adequate natural lighting for all spaces was only possible by creating wings and new openings that would allow the light filters through the large skylight in the living area to reach the most private spaces.
