Thermaltrex Sleeping Bag

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Clark's Thermaltrex Sleeping Bag as captured in this lifestyle composition operates as a symbolic threshold object—mediating between the vulnerable human body and elemental wilderness while enabling rather than preventing meaningful environmental encounter. The deep navy chromatic choice carries associations with depth, trust, and nocturnal sky, suggesting protection through the hours of darkness while harmonizing with maritime environments that traditionally symbolize contemplation, journey, and the unconscious. The cocoon-like wrapping evokes archetypal imagery of transformation and gestation, the sleeper enveloped in protective membrane before emergence renewed. Fire positioned at left activates ancient associations with hearth, community, and humanity's primal technology for survival—its warm orange flames creating symbolic dialogue with the cool blue shelter, representing the perpetual human negotiation between natural forces. The figure's back-facing orientation invites viewer projection and identification while honoring the subject's private contemplative moment, a compositional choice that positions the viewer as respectful witness rather than intruder. The enamel cup introduces a secondary warmth symbol—the containing vessel for nourishing liquid, traditionally feminine in archetypal terms and associated with sustenance and comfort. Hair caught by wind suggests vitality and connection to elemental forces even within protective enclosure, the sleeper neither isolated from nature nor overwhelmed by it. The sandy beach operates as liminal space—neither land nor sea—appropriate setting for the threshold experiences outdoor equipment facilitates. Considered through material culture lens, the design embodies contemporary values of portable comfort, environmental engagement without complete exposure, and the democratization of wilderness experience through thoughtfully engineered equipment.

Fires kill and injure. Campsite fires have a need for family safety. To do this a machine washable fire retardant polar fleece sleeping bag was made permanently fire retardant; without chemical treatments. To do it, they designed Thermaltrex; a fire retardant polar fleece which is breathable, cozy warm, washable, fast drying, light weight and meets the most toughest chemical standards in Europe e.g. Reach, plus airline blanket fire standards. Lay in it. Walk in it via dual zips, join two units together to make a double; all with confidence of safe fire protection without chemicals.
