Lang Chuan Cuisine Lounge

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2023

The spatial vocabulary deployed within GBD's Chuan Cuisine Lounge activates profound archetypal resonances through its deliberate manipulation of chromatic symbolism, vertical axiality, and material semiotics. The towering central installation functions as contemporary axis mundi, the world pillar connecting earthly realm to celestial sphere, here literalized through the mirrored ceiling that infinitely extends the sculptural column upward. The stacked vessel forms reference the universal archetype of the container, the womb, the vessel of transformation where raw becomes refined, ingredient becomes nourishment, gathering becomes communion. The bell-shaped crown carries associations with temple bells, calling to attention, marking thresholds between ordinary and sacred time. The chromatic dialogue between ultramarine and vermillion activates one of humanity's most fundamental symbolic oppositions: cool and warm, distant and intimate, contemplative and passionate, water and fire, yin and yang. Blue traditionally carries associations with infinity, transcendence, and spiritual depth across numerous cultures, while red signifies vitality, celebration, fortune, and the life force. Their juxtaposition creates productive tension between contemplative remove and engaged participation. The bilateral symmetry references classical architectural traditions of sacred and ceremonial spaces, establishing order, dignity, and reverence. The reflective floor surface, mirror-like as still water, introduces symbolism of reflection, doubling, and the liminal threshold between worlds. The warm amber glow emanating from the sculptural center suggests the hearth, the gathering fire, the transformative heat that converts raw materials into sustenance. The overall spatial choreography guides the inhabitant through zones of preparation toward the luminous center where transformation occurs, suggesting procession, pilgrimage, and ritual approach to the sacred act of communal dining.

Lang is a leisure social art museum where customers can eat during the day and drink wine at night. The restaurant looks like a black magic box. It uses the names and colors of tequila sunrise, black cherry, blue margarita, and sunset martini as the theme of each area, each space has a different character, and there is a collision between Eastern and Western cultures and aesthetics. It integrates Chinese Sichuan opera and panda characteristics into the design, colliding with western materials and oriental elements.
