The archetypal gabled form deployed in Katarzyna Starzyk's Double Barn House activates deep cultural memory associated with shelter, home, and the fundamental human need for protective enclosure, the pitched roof representing perhaps the most universally recognized symbol of dwelling across diverse building traditions. The architect's decision to render this primordial form in contemporary materials and spatial concepts creates a meaningful dialogue between collective memory and present aspiration, honoring tradition while embracing contemporary life. The full transparency of the primary facade transforms the solid protective barn type into a luminous lantern, a symbolic inversion where the traditional function of walls as visual barriers yields to transparency as expression of openness, welcome, and connection. This glass membrane creates threshold conditions rich with symbolic potential, the liminal space between interior domesticity and exterior nature, between private life and public presentation, between warmth and coolness. The exposed timber structure visible through the glazing celebrates material honesty and craft tradition, the radiating rafters functioning as symbolic ribs of the protective shelter while their warm honey tones evoke natural materials and human touch. The chromatic opposition between cool exterior cladding and warm interior illumination encodes the fundamental architectural promise of shelter, the transformation from exposure to comfort, from the vast coolness of the world to the intimate warmth of home. The triangular geometry of the gabled profile carries associations with aspiration, stability, and the mediating position between earth and sky. The setting among mature pine trees positions the architecture within natural cycles of growth and shelter, suggesting harmony between human dwelling and ecological context. The evening hour of the photograph, when interior lights glow against darkening sky, heightens the symbolic reading of architecture as beacon, refuge, and expression of human presence within the landscape.
Double Barn is a contemporary house located in the suburbs of Warsaw, designed for a family of four. The challenge was to create a modern, yet timeless house design, referring to the traditional architecture of Mazovia and adapting to the context of nature. In order not to overwhelm the surrounding single-family housing with its size, the house was divided into two interconnected blocks. From the inside of the house, mainly bright elements of HPL boards are visible, which makes it feel cozy. At the same time, the dark façades made of graphite tiles blend the house into the surroundings.
