Kuo Kuo-Hsiang's Water Ripples Chair operates as a meditation on impermanence captured in permanent form, drawing upon the universal symbolic resonance of water as representative of flow, change, reflection, and the cyclical nature of existence across numerous cultural traditions. The concentric ripple pattern carries profound meaning within contemplative philosophies, suggesting the radiating consequences of singular actions, the interconnectedness of all phenomena, and the way disturbances propagate through systems before returning to equilibrium, concepts central to meditative practices emphasizing present-moment awareness and acceptance of transience. The choice of mirror-polished metal introduces rich symbolic dimensions around reflection, self-contemplation, and the dissolution of boundaries between object and environment, inviting interpretations around the permeability of identity and the continuous exchange between self and surroundings that characterizes embodied existence. The crescent or lunar forms created by the chair's profile may evoke associations with cyclical time, feminine energy in various symbolic systems, and the waxing and waning patterns observable throughout natural phenomena. Positioning the furniture beside water establishes a sophisticated doubling wherein the manufactured ripples converse with authentic ripples, suggesting questions about the relationship between human creation and natural process, artifice and authenticity, the fixed and the flowing. The reflective surface functions symbolically as a threshold object, existing simultaneously as solid barrier and transparent window, inviting contemplation of liminal states and transitional experiences. Within design semiotics, the high-polish finish communicates precision, care, and elevated craft values, while the organic form language suggests harmony with natural systems and rejection of purely mechanical aesthetics. The chair ultimately embodies a reconciliation of opposites, being simultaneously functional and sculptural, permanent and fluid, manufactured and natural-seeming, inviting those who encounter it to consider how apparent contradictions might resolve into complementary aspects of unified experience.
The work is based on the water ripples, and it turns the natural scene into an interactive rocking chair that allows you to sit or lie down on the chair as if the body swings carefreely along with the movements of water ripples. The characteristic of it is the flowing texture of water ripples. No matter indoors or outdoors, especially where there is light, its water ripples will show natural light and shadow through the ground. It's like a ripple sculpture with artistic conception when it is at rest; however, it becomes a fascinating piece of furniture when an interaction occurs.
