Silver A' Design Award Winner 2023
Denver Hsu's Jian Gym operates as a rich symbolic environment where architectural elements encode meanings far exceeding their functional roles, inviting interpretation through multiple cultural and archetypal lenses. The dominant ceiling form suggests celestial symbolism, its disc-like presence evoking cosmic bodies, protective canopies, or the archetypal sheltering sky, while its bronze coloration connects to alchemical traditions where base metals transform toward gold, an apt metaphor for fitness facilities dedicated to bodily transformation and refinement. The travertine counter functions as an earth altar, its geological striations representing accumulated time, patience, and natural processes, grounding the space in permanence while the warm amber underlighting suggests internal fire or life force animating inert matter. The triangular spatial relationship between overhead disc, stone counter, and glass partition creates an implicit sacred geometry of stability and aspiration. Material semiotics communicate deliberately: the warmth of stone and bronze establishes hospitality and welcome, the precision of dark cabinetry signals professionalism and competence, while the transparency of glass promises openness and possibility. The faceted boulder-like form visible through the glass partition echoes primordial shelter archetypes, the cave or protective rock formation where strength is built in seclusion before emergence. The singular brass lamp operates as a vertical axis mundi connecting earthbound activities to elevated aspirations, its golden hue within the darker service zone functioning as an alchemical beacon. The overall spatial narrative moves from grounded reception through transformative interior to luminous beyond, suggesting a journey metaphor consonant with wellness culture narratives of passage from current state through disciplined practice toward desired becoming.
Unlike the traditional gym, it has no uncomfortable visual interference and fancy interior decoration. It is not just a gym: it also represents a lifestyle that can attract people with the same values to gather here. The designer aims to draw space through lighting, so that space is naturally divided into different functional modules, and at the same time, it brings a visual dynamic and capable experience to the fitness of the fitness.
