Shazhou Youhuang Cultural Park

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2023

Cennetoglu's Cultural Park operates as a sophisticated system of architectural signs encoding cultural values through material choices, spatial arrangements, and illumination strategies that communicate welcome, refinement, and community aspiration. The prominent perforated screen facade functions as the primary symbolic element, its geometric pattern of repeated hexagonal or floral motifs drawing upon ancient traditions of decorative screens found across numerous cultural traditions, from mashrabiya lattices to traditional wooden screens, suggesting privacy, filtration of light, and the transformation of harsh exterior conditions into gentle interior atmospheres. The warm golden illumination emanating through this screen transforms the building into a contemporary lantern, an archetypal symbol of guidance, enlightenment, and safe harbor that transcends cultural boundaries. The curved rooflines traced with continuous amber light evoke both the gentle undulations of natural landscape forms and traditional architectural silhouettes, creating symbolic bridges between contemporary construction methods and inherited building wisdom. The reflective pool operates on multiple symbolic registers, representing contemplation, the mirroring of consciousness, and the philosophical concept of the building engaging in dialogue with its own reflected image, suggesting introspection and self-knowledge appropriate to cultural programming. Water in architectural contexts universally symbolizes purification, transition, and the threshold between ordinary and sacred space, positioning visitors to cross this symbolic boundary upon approach. The bare deciduous trees introduce cyclical time symbolism, representing seasonal renewal, patience, and the acceptance of natural rhythms that contrast with architectural permanence. The twilight temporal setting carries liminal significance, the threshold moment between day and night symbolizing transformation, possibility, and the productive ambiguity of cultural spaces designed to facilitate new understanding and community connection.
