Alibaba Damo Nanhu Industry Park Research and Development

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2023

Aedas's Nanhu Industry Park project articulates through its facade treatment a symbolic language of seriality, modularity, and systematic thinking that resonates deeply with research and development typology, where the vertical fin system functions as architectural manifestation of scientific methodology—repetition with variation, controlled experimentation within established parameters, and the accumulation of incremental knowledge building toward comprehensive understanding. The rhythmic repetition of cream and beige elements evokes computational logic and digital serialization, suggesting the binary patterns underlying contemporary technological innovation while maintaining warmth through material choice and natural color associations that prevent purely mechanical readings. The warm neutral palette carries symbolic weight beyond functional solar control, suggesting intellectual accessibility and openness through light tonality while cream and beige traditionally associate with parchment, natural textiles, and organic materials, grounding technological expression in humanistic frameworks and suggesting that innovation serves human purposes rather than existing as pure abstraction. The vertical orientation of the fin system invites reading as ascending gesture, suggesting aspiration, growth, and the upward trajectory of knowledge accumulation, while the serialized multiplication of individual elements embodies collaborative research paradigms where individual contributions aggregate into collective achievement, no single element dominating but the cumulative pattern creating distinctive identity. The cantilevered upper volume floating above recessed ground floor establishes symbolic hierarchy, potentially representing theoretical knowledge elevated above applied implementation, intellectual activity suspended above public access, or the transcendent aspirations of research literally rising above earthly foundations, while simultaneously the transparent ground floor colonnade suggests democratic accessibility, inviting entry, and the porosity of institutional boundaries where knowledge flows between internal and external realms. The golden hour illumination bathing the structure carries temporal symbolism, suggesting the optimism of beginnings or endings, the productive threshold moments when transformation occurs, and the way knowledge illuminates obscurity, while the pronounced shadow modeling created by the fin system acknowledges that every advance in understanding casts new areas of shadow requiring further investigation, that light and shadow coexist in productive tension. The integration of landscape elements, particularly the vibrant scarlet and orange flowering plants, introduces organic counterpoint to geometric architectural order, suggesting biophilic integration, seasonal cycles of growth and renewal paralleling research cycles, and the grounding of technological innovation within natural systems and ecological consciousness. The low viewpoint positions the structure as aspirational yet approachable, monumentalizing the research endeavor while maintaining human scale at ground level, suggesting that institutional architecture can embody both the exceptional nature of advanced research and the accessibility of knowledge as public good. The horizontal extension of the building, emphasized by the low perspective, evokes expansion, growth, and the lateral connections between disciplines that characterize contemporary collaborative research environments, while the measured rhythm of the facade system suggests patience, systematic methodology, and the disciplined repetition underlying scientific rigor.

Alibaba Damo Nanhu Industry Park is the first headquarters of Alibaba Damo Academy, this project integrates the most technologically advanced research laboratories, visitors and exhibition centers, and ancillary facilities, to build a world-class scientific research institute on the banks of Nanhu Lake in Yuhang District, Hangzhou. The resulting design appears like a Bodhi leaf floating on the surface of the Nanhu Lake, embodying the graceful élan of Hangzhou.
