Y Club Bar and Restaurant

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2024

Within this hospitality environment by SANJ Design Studio, a rich symbolic vocabulary unfolds through deliberate spatial and material choices that communicate meaning beyond their functional purposes. The undulating ceiling operates as an archetypal representation of water or flowing energy, its continuous wave forms suggesting liquidity, flux, and the dynamic quality of social gathering that transforms rigid architectural boundaries into organic experience. Bronze and copper tones throughout carry longstanding associations with warmth, wealth, craftsmanship, and the transformative power of metallurgy, materials humanity has valued since antiquity for their ability to conduct heat, reflect light, and resist corrosion. The strategic insertion of cobalt blue within this amber environment creates what color psychology recognizes as thermal tension, the cool hue functioning as a threshold marker or liminal signal that distinguishes zones of different character within the unified space. Perforated screens reference the mashrabiya tradition and similar architectural filtering devices across cultures, elements that historically mediated between public and private realms while allowing air and filtered light to pass, here reinterpreted through contemporary materials to suggest selective revelation, the interplay between concealment and disclosure that characterizes sophisticated social environments. The circular tables function as archetypal gathering forms, the round shape eliminating hierarchy and facilitating equal engagement among participants, while their intimate scale encourages paired or small group interaction rather than larger assemblies. Low lighting conditions invoke the primordial campfire gathering, reducing visual access to distant zones while intensifying awareness of immediate companions and conversation. The paper lantern-like table lamps carry associations with celebration, temporary illumination, and the ephemeral quality of shared moments, transforming functional lighting into symbols of hospitality and welcome that transcend specific cultural boundaries to speak to universal human experiences of gathering, sharing, and communion.

The design of Y Club Bar and Restaurant combined multiple dining experiences in one place and have controlled the use of materials to create a simple and pure club space. Inspired by the Roaring Twenties, a short but special period, the project aims to present a black and gold era. The whole design discards the exaggerated decoration and creates a mysterious and exquisite club experience by carefully planning the space, selecting the materials and creating the lighting with care.
