Makina Andras I Watch

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2024

The rectangular case form of Danilo Villanueva & Makina & Co's creation functions as a deliberate departure from the circular dominance in watchmaking tradition, encoding values of architectural thinking, rational organization, and modernist design philosophy through its orthogonal geometry. Within horological symbolism, the rectangle suggests frameworks, boundaries, and structured time rather than the eternal cyclical continuity implied by circular cases, positioning the wearer as one who masters temporal organization rather than flowing with organic rhythms. The graduated dial coloration moving from light to dark carries embedded meaning suggesting transition, the liminal space between illumination and shadow that marks temporal passage through each day. Blue hands emerge as particularly significant chromatic choices, blue traditionally associated with truth, loyalty, wisdom, and celestial realms across numerous cultural traditions, their deployment here suggesting reliability and aspiration while providing functional contrast. The subsidiary seconds display at six o'clock, positioned at the nadir of the dial, creates subtle memento mori resonance, the continuous sweep of seconds marking inexorable passage at the compositional point traditionally associated with descent and endings. Applied three-dimensional indices cast minute shadows that shift with light angle, suggesting the design philosophy that authentic presence requires dimensional reality rather than mere surface representation. The integrated strap design, flowing seamlessly from case rather than articulating as separate component, communicates unified design thinking and holistic object conception. Matte black finish encodes contemporary sophistication, restraint, and purposeful rejection of ostentatious display, positioning the wearer within understated confidence rather than declarative luxury. The crown placement at four o'clock rather than traditional three o'clock suggests ergonomic consideration and user-centered thinking, encoding values of thoughtful design beyond conventional assumptions.

Makina Watches wanted to design a black sheep in the rectangular watch category that's already full of art deco inspired dress watches. That's why Andras I was born as a sports watch with a bolder and more modern approach. Coated in stealth black, its stainless steel case is composed of slopes and angular shapes that make up its multifaceted design. Its octagonal case is designed to taper around a larger movement for less volume and increased wearability. Its dial is multi-layered and 3 dimensional and its strap is muscular and shapely to look more imposing from every angle.
