Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024
Arcteryx and Still Young's Flagship Store operates as a sophisticated spatial narrative encoding the brand's philosophical alignment with wilderness, endurance, and the sublime power of natural forces through the deployment of a central biomorphic installation that functions simultaneously as architectural element, sculptural presence, and symbolic mediator between commercial space and primal landscape, the choice of weathered wood as primary material carries rich archetypal significance across cultures, referencing the world tree axis mundi connecting earthly and celestial realms, the driftwood cast upon shores after oceanic journeys, and the ancient forests that represent endurance across human timescales, the flowing sinuous forms suggest organic growth patterns, the mathematical spirals found in shells and plant structures, invoking the generative geometries underlying natural creation, the cavernous apertures piercing the wooden mass evoke threshold symbolism, portals between states of being, invitations to passage and transformation that align metaphorically with the outdoor pursuits the space serves, the rough stone element positioned at the base introduces telluric grounding, the mineral foundation from which organic life emerges, creating a symbolic progression from geological permanence through organic growth toward the human artifacts suspended within the environment, the transparent perimeter establishing visual continuity with living trees beyond extends this symbolic narrative, dissolving the conventional boundary between interior refuge and exterior wilderness that defines the experiential territory the brand inhabits, chromatic choices reinforce these associations through warm earth tones suggesting both the amber of ancient organic material and the golden light of optimal outdoor conditions, the vertical aspiration of the wooden forms combined with their fluid organicism may suggest the dynamic balance between reaching upward and remaining rooted that characterizes both natural growth and human achievement in demanding environments, the minimal presence of merchandise within this theatrical setting transforms commercial objects into almost votive offerings, artifacts contextualized within a larger narrative of human relationship to natural forces, inviting visitors to understand their potential purchases as tools for engaging the same elemental wilderness symbolically present within the space itself.
The design team hunted for fallen dead trees in the forest and transformed them into decorative columns by slicing and encasing them in glass. The tree rings on these columns serve as a visual testament to the trials and tribulations endured by the trees during their growth in nature a perseverance that resonates with the spirit of Arcteryx, which aims to break through limits and keep reaching upwards. The concept of tree holes is also applied to the first floor, where each scene draws inspiration from nature, catering to the desires of outdoor enthusiasts.
