Fashionable Guan Gong Stage Wear

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024

Golden filigree crowning the headdress carries traditional associations with celestial radiance and divine authority, the precious metal's warmth and luminosity historically encoding elevated spiritual or social status across numerous cultural traditions where solar symbolism intersected with concepts of enlightened rulership. The curved horn-like projections rising from the crown structure may evoke associations with mythological creatures—dragons, phoenixes, or other auspicious beings whose imagery traditionally signified power, transformation, and the mediation between earthly and heavenly realms. The deep emerald green dominating the robe historically carried associations with vitality, growth, and the life-giving forces of nature, while in theatrical contexts such saturated green often designated heroic figures of righteousness and martial virtue. The flowing navy cape introduces associations with celestial expanses and the element of water, its diaphanous quality suggesting the boundary between material and spiritual worlds where legendary figures were believed to operate. The phoenix or dragon embroidery at the shoulder participates in rich iconographic traditions wherein such creatures embodied cosmic renewal, strength, and auspicious fortune, their multicolored rendering amplifying symbolic potency through chromatic abundance. The wave-patterned embroidery covering the robe evokes oceanic imagery carrying associations with depth, continuity, and the eternal cycles governing existence. The compositional positioning of the figure against open sky and water suggests threshold symbolism—the heroic figure standing at the boundary between ordinary and legendary realms. The costume's layered complexity, combining metalwork, textile, embroidery, and translucent fabric, may be understood as encoding the multidimensional nature of the heroic archetype: simultaneously grounded in material reality through substantial robes while connected to transcendent realms through gleaming ornament and ethereal cape. The direct gaze establishes connection with viewers, inviting participation in the ceremonial transformation the costume enables.

Drawing inspiration from the attire of Guan Gong, the deity worshipped at the Puji Temple in Daxi, Taiwan, boasting over a century of intangible cultural heritage. This work challenges the representation of Eastern deity culture through Western three-dimensional tailoring. Simultaneously, it employs digital algorithms to explore the application of textile technology in traditional hand-embroidered works, aiming to reduce weight and enhance durability. Main techniques embroidered fabric labels, embroidery, and the application of mixed media in ethnic stage wear design.
