Anji Creative Design Center Urban and Rural Area

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024

Anjihood's Anji Creative Design Center Urban and Rural Area operates as a profound meditation on the reconciliation of human creativity with ecological systems, encoding within its architectural vocabulary meanings that resonate across multiple cultural registers of environmental stewardship and spatial wisdom. The green roof surfaces function as more than technical sustainability features, carrying symbolic weight as acts of restoration and reciprocity, suggesting that architecture might give back to the earth rather than merely extract from it. The terraced agricultural forms visible within the composition invoke archetypal imagery of cultivated hillsides found across numerous cultural traditions, positioning the creative center within longer narratives of human partnership with landscape through patient cultivation and seasonal attunement. White circulation pathways carry connotations of clarity, purity of intention, and openness to discovery, their serpentine forms echoing traditional garden design principles where indirect routes encourage contemplation and reveal destinations gradually rather than immediately. The geometric vocabulary balances rectilinear building volumes, associated with rational order and human organizational capacity, against organic curvilinear paths and living surfaces that embody natural growth patterns and ecological complexity. This compositional tension may be understood as encoding a central design philosophy: that creative work emerges most fruitfully from spaces that honor both structured human activity and the generative chaos of living systems. The preservation of mature trees within the complex carries symbolic resonance suggesting respect for existing ecological communities and temporal depth, acknowledging that meaningful places develop through accumulation rather than instantaneous construction. The aerial viewpoint itself offers perspective traditionally associated with contemplative overview and holistic understanding, inviting observers to perceive relationships and patterns invisible from ground level.

The ACDC (Anji Creative and Design Center) is located in Xilong Village, Anji County, Zhejiang Province, a famous white tea producing area in China. Completed in August 2023, with a gross floor area of 8320 sqm, the establishment of ACDC seeks to promote the modernization of the countryside in China through design and creativity. While introducing the concept of urban communities and urban population to the countryside, it seeks to bond the urban and the rural.
